GP Manufacturing Strengths and New GP Book Print E-mail

Does your firm use MS Dynamics GP for manufacturing? If so, I'll bet you have missed out on some of the many hidden strengths and features of the software package.

Just taking the MO Receipt Transaction, for example, users can manually or automatically assign serial or lot numbers to finished items. Last minute component additions or substitutions are easily recorded on the MO Receipt transaction! When a partial receipt is reported on an average cost item, the user can define exactly how much of the dollars placed into WIP are absorbed into the cost of the partial receipt, keeping the cost of inventory and ultimately the cost of goods sold at reasonable and accurate numbers.

The ability to automatically create purchase orders and manufacturing orders from an MRP analysis and manage those orders on schedule is phenomenally easy. And users with "where did that demand come from" have easy drill downs to the original sales order or inventory shortage.

Accolade has two books already out and a third one only a few weeks away that dive into the manufacturing components of GP...

Manufacturing Cost Accounting covers the roll-up of costs through the manufacturing process explaining how costs travel through the application and how standard costs can be calculated.

Product Engineering talks about creating inventory items for components and finished goods and building bills of materials and routers. All of the details of configuring the application to mirror your plant are covered as well as some interesting maintenance tools.

Shop Operations, due out by Convergence 2012, covers the issue, release, progress reporting, and finished goods receiving process for manufacturing orders. A special chapter cover Quick MOs and discusses their appropriate use versus a full MO.

Place an order today for one of the released manufacturing books and receive a 25% discount coupon on the Shop Operations manual when it is released.

You will find Accolade Publications, Inc., at Booth 2008 at Convergence 2012 in Houston. We will be on hand as years before to share the value of Accolade's Microsoft Dynamics ERP and Dynamics CRM user manuals and training materials. Will you be there?! If so, you can meet and ask questions of Accolade's publishing team and authors!

Dynamics GP Business Consultant extraordinaire, Accolade's publisher, and author Richard L. Whaley will be on hand at our booth (Booth 2008). On Day Two and Day Three at Convergence, Richard will be hosting the SSRS Reporting Table in the Birds of a Feather sessions of Convergence 2012. Attendees are invited to bring their own questions about the SSRS Reporting System and ask Richard (author of the book Creating Reports with SSRS). The format of the session should provide an intimate setting with only a few people with similar issues at a roundtable. Notably, Richard has authored Accolade books, such as, Information Flow and Posting for Dynamics GP and The Dynamics GP Power User Handbook.

Find these books and other user manuals and training guides for Microsoft Dynamics AX, CRM, GP, NAV, and SL at The Accolade Library Bookstore.

After the Close... What Next? Print E-mail

You may not yet have closed your GL module, but you should have closed all others.  The current year's purchases from vendors and sales to customers should only show the numbers from the first few weeks of January. Last year's numbers should be in the buckets for last year. When you look closely at what a year-end close does, other than calculate retained earnings in the GL, not much happens.

All of the transactions and history records that were held in the files in December are still in the tables. Very little, if anything, has been deleted. Many people like this... Infinitely detailed history is held in the files for research. For a time, this is good. Yet, there is a point where all this data will create problems.

I walked into a business that had fifteen years of detailed history in their tables! They had never purged any data. Their database was so large that backups could not be properly completed. Something had to be done...

Switched to SSRS Yet? Print E-mail

If you have not yet made the move to MS SQL SSRS, now is the time. Since your firm is on MS-SQL, you get this tool free. If you are on one of the more current versions of SQL, the tool can be installed directly from your installation media. Otherwise, download a free copy from the Microsoft website.

Microsoft's SQL Services Reporting System is growing in popularity. Dynamics GP now comes with several hundred pre-written reporting helps.

The SSRS report designer tools are easy to use. Yes, they are different, and this means a small learning curve. Yet, they contain some additional power to provide graphical displays of data, and with GP's new interface, the tool is becoming more and more popular.

Third-party product-developers have already adopted this report-generation tool. Accountable's Forms Printer, long the standard for easily-customizable documents, has added strong support for SSRS-generated forms and documents. Also, I am sorry to report, it is easier to use and more flexible than the MS Word documents embedded in GP.

If you need to learn this new tool, then Accolade's book, Creating Reports with SSRS, is what you need... It takes new users step-by-step through the process of creating reports with the reporting tool, while expert users are provided hints and tricks to enable them to build better and more flexible reports and documents.

Whether you need to create new reports from scratch, modify the reports provided with Dynamics GP, or enhance forms, you want to get yourself a copy of Creating Reports with SSRS!

Reporting Your Data! Print E-mail

Getting your information out of a database and on to paper requires several skills...  You need to know where your data is located and how to use the reporting tools.   Accolade can help with both of these!

Knowing where your data is requires more than just a map of tables.  Yes, there are open order tables and order history tables.  But when does data move from one to the other?  How can you read from both set of tables?  Accolade's Information Flow and Posting tells you how and when your information moves through the tables in the system!  It explains how to relate payments to invoices, open or historical.  It explains where all of the GL account numbers come from for the core modules.  This book makes finding your data easy!

We also have several books on reporting tools.  From Creating Reports with SSRS to Customizing with The Builders, the most common report writers are covered in Accolade materials.
